Mycoplasma, bacteria and viruses are the typical contaminants in cell culture. A contamination of any one of these can have substantial effects on research results as well as cause large losses where production of biopharmaceuticals is concerned. Very often these contaminations manifest themselves and show no obvious change to the cell cultures.
